Expanding My Horizon

When I first travelled to Europe while I was in college I really had the time of my life seeing the many different types of cultures. The flavors of the food, the welcome of the people, the love shared across the world seemed so much greater than living in the United States. The festivals in the streets, the smile in people’s faces, the little bakeries, the cafes, everything about europe was warm and welcoming and to live there was something really special.

I started this website originally because I studied abroad through Council, a program which helps students learn to study in foreign countries. I really am so glad to have had the opportunity to study abroad as it has changed the path of my life in many ways and I really suggest any student today to take advantage of these programs as it will expand your world so much. And if you’re thinking of doing it do it for academic year and NOT a semester. Thankfully, people told me that a semester abroad would only frustrate me and a year was the only way to emmerse yourself and get the most out of the experience. If you’re gonna do it.. do it right and do if for a whole year. Don’t waste your time with a single semester but if a semester is all you can do.. do it in the spring and stay till summer’s over.

And it really isn’t about Europe, if you’re ready for a foreign country I think that is the ultimate experience. Europe is also a great place to study as it offered a huge array of cultural experiences and the opportunity to meet people who had wordly views and views of the US…. oh and will people tell you. But these conversations I had really helped me learn more about myself and my country in the eyes of someone outside. I didn’t argue.. I listened and learned.

So while travelling Europe I must say that the highlight was Turkey. Italy was beautiful and such a breathe of fresh air, Spain was so amazing, and living in London was a fierce high pace strut… but what really fascinated me was the Orient. I think visitng Turkey was the best decision in my whole European journey because it opened a new door of interest in the selection of countries, particularly those that are less developed. Now I really want to go to African and places that are really poor… and like everyone else, I want to make a difference somehow, someway.

After Travelling to Europe I cried my way back to the states… and I really was sad to come back to the States. Actually, everytime I leave the country for a good amount of time… I have such an amazing experience. And I dread sitting in that custom’s line wishing I could turn around and get on that plane.

Living outside of America is such an amazing experience and for those that are doing it, I really admire you. I want to live outside. I love to live outside. The life is intense outside, you don’t have CNN scaring you about stories outside.. you don’t have the media tapping into your nervous system outside. It’s so refreshing to be able to escape the American Life and be one with people on the outside.

While I was in Asia I was fortunate to live in Bangkok for a couple months and really had it good. I think Bangkok is one of the COOLEST cities in the world at this moment. Everything about Bangkok, the price, the vibe, the energy, even the smog and unclenliness is something that will make you want to stay forever.

My trip to Asia in general really convinced me how far behind the United States is falling in regards to development. In Asia, there buildings erect overnight with 5 star luxury and modern finishes nicer than what you’d expect from Beverly Hills. They have the coolest malls, the coolest history, the food from thailand and across the world is amazing, just everything about Asia is intruiging and the energy there is right on. Maybe that’s why all our jobs are going there… they got the hustle.

What really interested me about Asia was seeing how many ex-pats live there and how many escape and in return in Asia, especially Thailand. I think most of these people will agree that of all places in the world Thailand offers such a relaxed way of life and people look after you.

Well I am not done with my Journey through have a thousand more places to see before I die. What I really want to do is inspire myself and inspire others to see new places and meet new faces. Americans in particular travel to the ordinary.. Hawaii, Carribean, maybe Mexico if you’re lucky. More Americans are doing cruises these days which is great and all but you’re stuck on a boat and when you visit the ports you have 5 hours to see the tourist traps. I really like to travel because I like to meet people from around the world and I think everyone should do their part in getting to know locals from the places you visit.

We cannot judge a person’s culture from what we see on the news… people are alot nicer than we think and meeting these people with the right energy and approach can do wonders and offer us a true worldly perspective. I love sharing new experiences with foreigners.

I really want to inspire Americans to stop staying at the cookie cut hotels like The Marriot and places the normally stay because of the corporate/customer loyalty systems that are in place. Step outside of the traditional way you travel and stay at a local bed and breakfast, shy away from the tourist beaches, hike to someplace new, eat a new restaurant [and if you get a flu..celebrate the flu because that is all part of the experience]… just do something different everytime because this life is shorter than we know and there are so many things out there it just takes a little wandering and low expectations.

Travel By Yourself. So many kids take contiki tours in Europe with 50 of their friends and evertime it ends up a fiasco. I think the rewards of travelling alone are amazing and it teaches you so much about you. Travelling alone also lets you decide what you want to do and not what your friends want to do. I love travelling with people but sometimes a day apart is necessary to make the trip work out.

For this site…I want to step outside the comfort zone. I really want to offer some ideas for travelling and suggestions as well as receive some from those that have visited amazing places and want to share.

The purpose of this site is to bring together people who love to travel and try new things and for those to share amongst themselves the experiences of their travels and the places they suggest… the word on the street.

So with that, I bring to you my experiences, my photo collection capturing life in other places, and a place to meet other people who want to expand their horizons and minds.

Please feel free to write me a message below. I really love reading what everyone has to say and it is YOU who inspires me to keep doing this.

Thank you for visiting and I hope we cross paths in a foreign land.

Cheers,

Tony Nuccio

  1. Thomas Scott, Maryland, U.S.

    Hello Tony;

I discovered your page while surfing Jill Scott’s myspace page and thought that you were a music producer or something. After reading about you and your travels I thought “Here’s a guy who’s enjoying all life has to offer”. Seeing your life as it is depicted gave me a precious glimpse at life’s invisible network proving yet again that we are all connected and music is just one of the common threads that binds us. Thank you for that.

Great website! Reading about your experiences, travels and studies abroad are a true inspiration to me. I myself love to travel….. especially to Ibiza. Been there twice and I am about to embark on my third trip to the White isle in late summer 2006. This time I am taking a group of friends with me to share amazing Ibiza with them. I hope to study abroad one day as well. Reading your experiences really makes me smile. Thanks for the inspiration!

  17. Craig Pollett of Canada

    Tony,
Love the site…going to London in July for a second visit and your photos and commentary about this astounding city are the best I’ve seen in all my googling!! I noticed that the last photo in the Charing Cross section doesn’t have a caption. It’s actually Canada House, the Canadian embassy. The slightly geometric flag in the forground is for my home province of Newfoundland and Labrador. There is a flag for each province and territory in Canada.

    Keep up the great work!

I liked your piece about Pamplona and the festival of San Fermin. You friend sure missed out on a great festival by going to the local cyber cafe. The Running of the Bulls and a bull fight is one of the best experiences I’ve had in life. I don’t know if you’ve been back but you should. Participating in a run is beyond exilerating. I ran 5 times in 2000 and 6 times in 2003.

  49. Anna Marantidis

Hi Tony, I’m half Greek, Half Spaniard and am living in New York. I just wanted to say thank you for being honest in talking about the differences between Americans and Europeans, and for pointing out how sheltered, materialistic and close minded the U.S. is. People like you, who seek out experiences to broaden their minds and who really immerse themselves in a new culture looking for true awareness, are few. Please email me if you ever come to Manhattan, I would love to meet you.

Hi, I loved reading about your excursions across Europe and looking at the photos of different cities you have been to. I want to got to Naples and Barcelona over the next year and your comments and thoughts on these places have helped to give me an informed insight into these two cities. I live in London by the way and am a 41 year old teacher from Wales. I actually have an American friend who comes from Long Island and now is a doctor. I met him while he was studying in London. I must go to America to visit him one day! From the pics I can see you had a great time travelling around Europe and you have now inspired me to travel more!

Your website is extremely fab! and like one of those human study sites or geological sites which help people studying cultures or tourists.

I was searching images of Scotland Yard because I went there the other day and I was content in finding a nice picture of it and instead I discovered a great site full of colourful images and information about London itself!

I am very sure I shall return to your site in a very near future to read your other adventures! I’m sure my companions will find your site exceedingly excellant too!

    Your site is totally unique.

Hey Tony, what’s up? I came across your website when I was looking for blogs written by people who’ve been to Ibiza. I was thrilled to find out you were a “Buff” cuz I just graduated from the Enginerding school at CU myself and I’m dying to go back to Boulder! Considering how much a coincidence this is and how similar our views of the world are I decided to stop by and say: YOUR WEBSITE ROCKS, MAN! Keep up the good work!

    forgive me ……… I have sinned :(
I used one of your pictures of a rainy Skye in humour on a web board (as I am Scottish) I trust it is OK ;)
That led me to peruse your site which sadly I don’t have time to do justice to. Clearly a master piece of great adventure and here’s to it being of continued inspiration to all that visit.

And why is there no Scotland in the drop down box?

I am a Hispano-French living in England for now. Was starving for a bit of Spanish living back in my life. Booked a trip to Madrid for Pride 2004. In the meantime Toni, your page is Fan Tas Tic! You really painted the Madrid I like and certainly understood the city and the people well. Your site took me through emotions I haven’t been experiencing for a while. I like your eye for Spanish life y su movida. Muchas gracias por hacerme escapar del Grey London.

Hi Tony. I really enjoyed your pictures in Madrid. I bet you guys had so much fun. I myself am an International Business and Spanish major and I’m about to embark for my study abroad experience in Madrid. I also enjoyed reading the journal. It’s given me tips on which discotecas and restaurantes to go to. Good Luck with everything and thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to learn about the experience that you have encountered during your study abroad. I hope I’ll have fun just like you did. :-)

I stumbled across this site because I wanted to see what the rooms at Wigram House were like since I’m going to stay there for a few days in June. Can I just say… your pictures are AMAZING and I really wish I could have gone to all the places you have been. I’ve been studying at the Uni of Edinburgh since September, and I’m leaving in June. Time really flies. I’m from Los Angeles and I go to UC Santa Barbara. I’m on a junior year abroad program. Anyway, I’m really going to miss Europe. It’s beautiful isn’t it? Oh, and I wanted to recommend this book called The Da Vinci Code. If you ever go to Paris again, you’ll appreciate it a lot more after reading the book. It’s decriptions are accurate and it tells an awesome story. So, if you’re in to reading… you should check it out. Good luck in school and have a blast.

Just about finishing up travel plans for Spain and Portugal! This web site has helped! Would anyone know is there an email address to contact Buen Dormir in Sevilla? Do they have parking? Any advice for places to stay in Tavira, Lagos, and Santiago Do Cacem (or Sines) in Portugal! We are two guys from Ottawa Canada in search of good budget accomodations in these places…preferrably with email address and sites we can view the info! Thanks for your help Tony! Once again an amazing site!

In a word…”WOW!!!!” Proud to be the odd duck that I am, I like to visit the websites of the record companies that produced some the leading R&B acts of the day. Hidden Beach–home to some of the finest artists–has a slick website that demands your attention…and more!!
I’m in the planning phases of rolling out my arts organization (that I developed with my sis). Our concept is simple–fusing words with visual aids…and to that we gave birth to the Grapevine Center for Communication Arts. We expect to put out a website by next year. How does a group like ours get close to the talents of someone of your caliber??? DO tell!!
    Many thanks…keep keepin’ it real!!
    Kim B.

Tony~ I am just some random Basque college student living in Boise, ID. I just wanted to give you mad props for the great website of photos of Donosti aka San Sebastian. It is really well put together, and your appreciation for this magnificant region is great to see, as San Sebastian is my favorite place in the world. Thanks for the great website, I have vivid memories from when I was 10 and being lost in the streets where that big cathedral is for 7 hours, oh the horror. Anyways, thanks for the great website!

I´ve allso been around Europe, Germany,France,Austria,Prag for few days,Skandinavia of course and then Turkey wich was really great.
Hope you´ll have many great trips and add everything on your website.
    Gudrun.

  145. Joe Tamargo, USA

    Hi Tony., how are you?
My name is Jone Tamargo and I am from San Sebastian. I go to the Graduate school in Boston and I miss home so much that I was spending some time on google and I saw your web site and I think it’s great. I love it, especially all those beautiful photographs of Spain. It’s nice to hear that you love San Sebastian. I love it too. I think it is the best city in the world, besides Istanbul and maybe Rome. I hope you had a good time in Pamplona. I did my undergraduate studies there and Pamplona is a fun place to live but it is not as beautiful as San Sebastian. I laughted so bad with the following lines: “My travelmate Alex and I couldn’t get a train and couldn’t rent a car after being guinea pigged around car rental places. Great customer service Spain has let me tell you. The customer is always wrong and Julia Car Rental in Barcelona lied straight into our faces that they didn’t have any cars available when we saw some in their lot. The salesman probably just wanted to go home instead of helping us out. ”

Spanish people’s lifestyle is completely different from Americans. It seems that we dont work hard but it is not true, the only different is that we have a different schedule and we know how to live well. I hope to come back to Spain again. Take care

  146. Anthony P., USA

Excellent job, easy to navigate. You pretty much summed up my trip to Italy. Very cool.

  147. Scott Baker, USA

    Hello Tony -
I enjoyed your website. I am going to Italy and stumbled onto your site because I was looking for photos of Cinque Terre. We will be there in late December - about the same time you were.
We will be flying into Rome and drivng up to Florence and on to Genoa. Any tips on the trip? We thought about taking the train from Florence up to Genoa. What do you recommend? Should we drive? I know we will have to take a train over to the Cinque Terre.
It looks like you live in LA…right? My partner and I just moved to Atlanta from there about a year ago. We miss West Hollywood.
Thanks for taking me on your journey. Check out my web site too when you get a chance. I welcome your coments and response.
    Good day,
    Scott Baker

  148. Gavin, UK

I love this website. It’s like a window on your travels. Your pictures are excellent. The angles and ideas you use when taking a photograph have inspired me to try something different. How do you take the panoramic pictures posted. It looks as though you have takena a few photographs and put them together but how do you get them to match up??
Keep it up and get some more photos on. You look like you’re living it up!! Don’t stop!!!!

Hi!Just to say that it is an awesome website and I have no idea how I´ve found it! I´ve loved all those photos that you´ve taken from Turkiye. I was reading it as well and everything that you have written is SO Turkey!! I was on an exchange program there for a year (4years ago), and I really miss that mistic, misterious, beautiful place! Well, I hope I can get there one day again!
Cheers - and congratulation! It is a really cool website!!!
    Cláudio.
PS - I´m brazilian and sorry about my English, my first language is portuguese

  151. Daniel, USA

Nice website! I found you by looking for pictures of Rome on Yahoo. I’m travelling to Europe next week for a month starting in Spain, then France and finally to Italy, where I’ll spend a week in Rome as well as a few days in Florence. I love photography, so I was wondering if you had any recommendations about where to go off of the beaten path to take some pictures? I don’t want to see any museums or fountains, but instead dark alley’s and cobble stone roads and local people. It sounds like you have a good time there. Do you recommend any places to eat? Any tips?
    Let me know.
    Best regards,
    Daniel

    Hello
My name is Faisel. I was surfing the web forinformation regarding traveling abroad and came across your website. I really enjoyed the photos and links. I just have a couple of questions on your expirence so that maybe I can have one of my own. While you traveled abroad were you able to get a job to help support your self or did the school/program you were with take care of that? Also can you recommend any organizations where I can find information of how to fund my study abroad expirence for a semester? And
lastly, was being away from America for a semester overwhelming culturally if so in what ways. Did you travel with a friend or just make new ones along the way? I would really appriciate and help you can give me.
    Thanks for your time,
    Faisel

In looking for sights and information about San Sebastian I found your trip
to be very interesting. I must say that I found them to be great and
exactly what I was looking for. I was wondering if you can forward any
information on places to stay. A two star accommodations in the town would

Hello, I was wondering what you charge to redesign a website… I saw what you did for Hidden Beach and it is fantastic…
    let me know.

  185. James Gallagher, UK

    Hi,
I was surfing the net looking for some sites with pictures of Athens before I fly out in 2 days, and came across your site. First of all I would like to say that you have taken some amazing pictures and secondly that your site is fantastic, in both style and content.

I also looked at your pictures of London (I live in north London , in a town called Ilford, near Romford), and they are also up to the high standard of the others on your site. Your journal or diary (whatever you want to call it) about your time in London was really interesting. I always enjoy hearing the opinions of foreigners visiting or living in London , especially when they are good. There are some things I don’t agree with, but each to their own.

None the less, a great site, a great read and great picture. Well done.

    All the best,
    James

  186. Nia, USA

I don’t have a site yet, but I’m working on setting it up ASAP. I was on the Hidden Beach site and saw your name at the bottom for web design. Do you do web design for other industries? Who did you register your site with and who does your hosting?

I love the photos!!!!! One day soon I’ll be ballin’ and traveling like you.
    peace,

    Nia

My jealousy is overwhelming but seriously I have to talk to you about it. I haven’t been to Europe yet and kick myself everyday for not doing anything about it. I will go soon hopefully but the site was so awesome the photos and the captions. Incredible! Simply incredible.

    Hey TJ,
It’s Sam Myers. Remember me from Libby, and the Pi Class? I was in Boulder this weekend and Song and Dylan told me about your website. I just got done taking a look at it. Your whole experience in Europe seems amazing. I’m happy that you got the chance to go abroad. I really wanted to do the same, and I swore that I would do it, but it never happened. I hope you’re enjoying life abroad. I’ll probably visit Boulder again next fall. If you’re there, we’ll have to catch up.

  194. Heather Glick, USA

Hi, my name is Heather, and as you can see I go to USC. This evening I was feeling down so I thought I would go online and look at some pictures of Positano, my absolute favorite place in the world, to try and cheer myself up. I did a search and your website was the third link on the results page, and when I clicked on it I was just so amazed. First, I loved your pictures of Positano. Then I went on and explored pictures of the rest of your trip. The more I saw, the more in awe (for definite lack of a better word) I became. I’ve been to England, France, Italy, and Israel, but only for a week at a time for each trip. Anyways, I just thought that your website was wonderful, and I’m sure that your trip was more than unforgettable. I hope that someday I will be able to embark on such an exploration myself. Thanks for sharing your memories.

    Hi Tony,

I Came acorss your site and love the pictures from cinque terre. I am planning a trip to italy, now would like to include cinque terre in my itinary after seeing those pix on your site. If it isnt too much trouble, do you mind tell me how did your get to cinque terre? i mean in terms of transportation. I am planning to take the train from either genoa down to naples visiting cities along the way, but i do not see a train terminal call cinque terre. Also, about the trail that connects the 5villages…how long were they? miles? days? I will be traveling alone, did it seem safe to do this trail alone? Last question, could you recommend a place to stay? the on-a-budget kind…i couldnt find any hostelsonline in that area.

    Thanks for your time!

    Hi Tony!

I found your web site while I was searching for pictures of Europe. I just wanted to tell you that your web site is amazing and the pictures are incredible. The fun thing about your web site is that I have been to almost every single place you have on your web site. If you could be so great as to answer my questions I would really appreciate it. I was wondering if your trips are tours or is it you and just friends? It really looks like you had fun on your trip. My last question is what was your favorite country and where are you planning to go next?

    Thanks for your time

    Cheers,

    hello!

I have just come back from Istanbul and found your website pictures on Istanbul. They are marvellous and remind me so much of my own trip. I was wondering if I could use some of the pictures for my own personal photo album as I didn’t take any photos myself inside the bazaars and the mosques. I also stayed at the youth hostel so loved seeing pictures of the street! I hope that would be OK.

    many thanks

    Ann

Could I ask you what camera did you use, and what speed film ?

  210. Debbie Yim, United States

    Hi Tony,
I just visited your website and loved your pictures of Sevilla. I was debating whether to visit the city after my 12 day tour of Eastern Spain and I think I will go. But I wanted to ask you how long the bus ride took and how much it cost to get from Madrid to Sevilla. My roommate and I didn’t want to spend too much more money so the info would help us out.
    Thank you!

    Sincerely,
    Debbie Yim

    Hey!

I don’t know you, and you don’t know me, but after stumbling upon your website this afternoon I feel like we’re old friends. What a great site! The photos and journal entries from your European adventure made me feel like I was back on the continent myself. By the way, my name is Adam and I live in New England. Are you in Los Angeles? Feel free to drop me a line sometime and say hello… I’m always happy to meet interesting new friends.

    Take care-
    Adam ;)

    Dear Tony,

don’t know how to ask properly and nice. So I do it directly.
I had written for something about four months a fan fiction about Buffy the
Vampireslayer. Now this is of course of no interest to you. But please just
stay with me until the end of this mail.

It’s a story about my fav heroine and a (nice) very bad vampire and it takes
place in London. - Now, this is the point, where you and your wonderful
    pictures join the part.

I would like to copy some of your great pics into the story. Because it is
also a story about London. And I would like to show the readers of the story
    how beautiful London is.

Here’s my plea. Please give me your permission to use some of your pics.
Would be very nice of you.

I don’t know, if you know the TV-Show. If you hate or love it. And I
